Date and Location: The battles were from May 18th to July 4th, 1863 at Warren County, Mississippi (1). The siege ended July 4th.

Summary: Grant had been trying for a while to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi but the Confederates hadn't allowed it. He made a surprise attack on Bruinsburg (near to Vicksburg) and moved inward eliminating Joseph Johnston as a threat. Grant then had Union victories at Champion Hill (2) and Pemberton was forced to retreat to Vicksburg. They then sieged the town. (1,3)
